What Does a Volunteer English Teacher Actually Do?
Your students are predominantly young monks, ranging from 8 to 25 years old, whose lives are deeply rooted in scripture, meditation, and spiritual discipline. English acts as their bridge to the outside world, essential for engaging with global visitors and accessing broader educational opportunities.
Your daily tasks will be varied and rewarding:
- Facilitate Conversational Practice: Move beyond textbooks by encouraging natural dialogue, pronunciation drills, and everyday vocabulary.
- Design Interactive Activities: Create games, storytelling sessions, and letter-writing exercises that make learning stick.

Your Typical Daily Schedule (Mon–Fri)

Wake to the monastery’s spiritual hum. Attendance is optional, but the experience is mesmerizing.

Communal Breakfast

Teaching Sessions
Two 90-minute blocks. This is your prime time to shine as an educator.

Where do monastery volunteers stay in Nepal?
TravAction works with monasteries across Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the Himalayan region. Most volunteers are placed in Kathmandu or Pokhara — both are easy to get around and most monasteries sit close to Boudhanath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world.

What are the living conditions like?
You'll stay inside or directly beside the monastery compound. A private room, a bed, basic furniture, shared bathrooms. Three meals a day from the monastery kitchen. Electricity is reliable in most placements, less so in remote ones.
This isn't a guesthouse, and it's not supposed to be. Some volunteers find the simplicity calming after the first few days. Others find it hard, then get used to it around week two. We say this not to put you off but because it matters for whether this is the right choice for you.

- We offer placements starting from 2 weeks. However, longer stays (1 to 3 months) significantly amplify your impact on the monks' language retention.
- Our TravAction coordinators are local experts available around the clock. They will check in regularly and handle any logistics or personal concerns.
- Focus on modest attire, long skirts or trousers and covered shoulders. Bring sturdy walking shoes, a reusable water bottle, and visual teaching aids like flashcards or maps.
