Volunteering in Nepal isn't free, and people often ask us why. The short answer: your program fee pays for the support package that keeps volunteering safe, organized and useful for the community you join.
What your program fee covers
Inclusions vary by program, and each program page lists them. In general, your fee pays for:
- Vetted accommodation with a host family or in volunteer housing
- Daily meals
- An orientation covering language basics, culture and safety
- Placement matching, so your skills go where they are needed
- A local coordinator and 24/7 support throughout your stay
Why host projects can't cover these costs
Most of our partner schools, monasteries and community centers run on very small budgets. Asking them to house and feed volunteers would take money away from the children and families they serve. Your fee means your stay adds to their resources instead of drawing on them.
Where your money goes
TravAction Nepal is a locally run team in Kathmandu. There's no overseas head office or international middleman, so most of your fee is spent in Nepal: on your food and housing, on local staff and on the projects you join.
What isn't included
Plan separately for international flights, your Nepal visa, travel insurance, vaccinations and personal spending such as weekend trips.
