What "cheap" should mean when you volunteer in Nepal

A low fee is only good value if it still covers the basics. Before you compare prices, check what each program includes: a safe place to stay, daily meals, an orientation when you arrive, and a local coordinator you can call if something goes wrong. A program that looks cheap but leaves you to sort out housing and food on your own often ends up costing more, and it puts extra pressure on the host community.

• Budget for the extras: your Nepal visa (available on arrival at Kathmandu airport), travel insurance, vaccinations and personal spending.

• Eat local. A plate of dal bhat at a local restaurant costs a fraction of a tourist-menu meal.
